Budhanilkantha Vishnu Temple Darshan

Highlights:
The huge idol of Lord Vishunu carved out of granite is located north of Kathmandu's. This is also the largest idol of Lord Vishnu in Nepal. Local hold a belief that some 500 years ago while an old farmer was ploughing his field the tip of the plough stuck to something. When he dug at the place the idol was revealed. When the idol was being dug out it was hit by the toe in the throat giving a blue mark. thus, the idol was named Budhanikkantha because of the blue mark in the throat and because it was found by an old man. Large numbers of devotees throng the temple to offer worship everyday.

Budhanilkantha, situated at the foot of the Shivpuri Hills in the northern-most part of the Kathmandu Valley, is about 10 km from the city. The shrine with probably the largest stone statue of Lord Vishnu in Nepal is reclining on a bed of Nagas or serpents in the middle of a small pond. The 5-m long granite image carved out of a single rock dates back to the Lichchhavi period.

Budhanilkantha Temple Legend:
Nilkantha or the blue-throated god is name given to Shiva as he swallowed the all-destroying poison, which came out during churning of the ocean. However, in the Kathmandu valley there is a very holy shrine situated about 10 km. on the north-east side of Kathmandu called Budhanilkantha or reclining Vishnu or Sheshshaiy Vishnu. Bhuddhist worship this image of reclining Vishnu as Nilkantha Lokeshvara, one of the Avalokiteshvaras.

Festival:
A big mela (fair) is held at Budhanilkantha on the auspicious two main Ekadashis, Harishayani and Haribodhini, marking the 4-month period when Lord Vishnu is believed to retire to sleep.
