Welcome to
Sikkim - Tranquility Supreme:
The enchanting little state of
Sikkim lies in the eastern end of the mighty Himalayas flanked
by Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet on it's east, west and northern
borders respectively.
Sikkim lies nestled under the protective shadow of its guardian
deity, Mount Knachenjunga (8598m). the third highest mountain in
the world. Conveniently accessible by rail air and road, this
little Himalayan jewel is fast becoming a favorite gateway for
tourists in recent years.
The area of Sikkim is 7,096 sq. kms and measures approximately
about 110 kms from north to south and about 64 kms for the east
to the west. The elevation ranges from 224 mts to over 8590m
about sea-level which gives Sikkim it's incomparably range of
flora and fauna the majestic mountain peaks, the dense foothill
forests, the frothing rivers and the lush paddy fields make this
22nd state of India a hotbed of bio-diversity not found anywhere
else. |

DISTRICT - SIKKIM |

Meadows and Wildflowers Galore |

|
The
district Headquarters are at
MANGAN which has now become somewhat
of a gateway to the unexplored
North. The northernmost edges of
this district merge into the Tibetan
Plateau which lends its uniqueness
to this sparsely populated region.
The Tibetan wild ass, know locally
as the Kyang, has been spotted in
this region. Like the rest of Sikkim,
this Districts too has its share of
monasteries and legends but the most
famous spot is Yumthnang. |

Yumthang is located in a flat
valley whose sides reach up to the
towering mountains at an elevation
of 11,800 ft. About 149 kims from
Gangtok, Yumthang is also referred
to as the valley of Flowers, and is
a naturalist's paradise in Spring.
Wildflowers, primulae and
rhodoendendron bathe the landscape
in rich colours. A must-see here are
the hote-springs at Yume-Samdong.

KABI
LONGTSOK |

|
About
17 kms away from Gangtok is Kabi
Longtsok where the Tibetan
Chieftain, Khey-Burnsar signed a
blood brotherhood with the Lepcha
Shaman Te-Kung-Tek, The spot is
marked by a stone amidst the shadows
of a dense wooded area. The statue
of unity erected near the Thankubari
Temple in Gangtok is in memory of
this event. |

CHUNGTHANG |
 |
 |
|
Chungthang, about 95 kms away from
Gangtok enroute to Yumthang lies the
tiny hamlet of Chungthang at the
confluence of the two rivers, the
Lachen Chhu (which later evolves
into the Teesta) and the Lachung
Chhu. A riotable feature is a foot
print atop a rock which is said to
be that of Guru Padmasambhava.
LACHEN and LACHUNG, where the
exptic view and way of life is
highly fascinating. |

PHODONG MONASTERY |
 |
 |
|
This
monastery is located about a
kilometer about the North Sikkim
Highway about 40 kms away from
Gangtok. The monastery was built by
Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal sometime in
the first quarter of the eighteenth
century. |

LABRANG MONASTERY |
 |
|
A
kilometer further from Phodong, the
labrang monastery was built about a
100 yrs later. This monastery
belongs to the Nyingmapa Sect. of
Tibetan Buddhism, the same as that
of Pemayangtse Monastery in West
Sikkim. Its name translates simply
as the dwelling place of the lamas
(monks) |

TUMLONG PALACE RUINS |
 |
|
Between
the two monasteries are the Tumlong
Place ruins which was the third
capital of the erstwhile kingdom of
Sikkim. The capital was shifted from
Rabdentse to Tumlong sometime in the
beginning of the nineteenth century,
where it remained for almost ninety
years. |

PHENSONG MONASTERY |
 |
|
Situated on a gentle slope between
Kabi and Phodong is the Phensong
Monastery set amidst beautiful
landscapes. It belongs to the
Nyingmapa Order and was built in
1721 during the time of Jigme Pawo. |
 |
|
GURU-DONGMAR LAKE |
 |
|
This
milky lake is considered as the
sacred place both by Hindu and
Buddhist. It is believed that Guru
Padmasamhava had hourched the lake
whilst he visited Tibet through this
place. |

On Treks Camping Equipment consisting of Two men-tent &
mattress, Freshly cooked meals, Dinning & Toilet tents, Ponies
and trek staffs. A minimum of 2 person is required for obtaining
permit to trek in Sikkim. |

GETTING THERE:
Fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar /Bhadrapur (Nepal) and transfer
by road or fly from Delhi /Calcutta to Bagdogra (India) and
transfer by road. The other option would be to arrive by train
from any part of India to New Jalpaiguri. |

SEASON:
Mid February to late May and Mid September to late December. |
CLOTHING:
During Summer-light jackets & rain gears. In winter-down gears
at high altitude. |

ENTRY FORMALITIES:
All foreigners intending to visit Sikkim has to avail of an
Indian visa which can be obtained at any Indian Embassy or
Mission abroad. The inner state permit which is also a must can
be obtained along with the visa. |
