NAM TSO LAKE TOUR: |
Nam Tso, approx. 190 km. North-west of Lhasa, It is
the 2nd largest salt water lake in China, the 1st
one being KOKO nor Nor (Qinghai Lake) in Qinghai
province. It is over 70 km long and reaches a width
of 30km. The Nyenchen Tanglha range, with peaks of
more than 7000m, towers over the lake to the
south-It was these mountains that Heinrich Harrer
and Peter Aufschnaiter crossed on their incredible
journey to Lhasa. Nam Tso is a tidal lake and the
ring marks of earlier lake levels are clearly
visible by the shoreline.
Visits to Nam Tso have become increasingly popular
with independent travelers over the past few years.
In clear weather the water is a miraculous shade of
turquoise and there are magnificent views of the
nearby mountains. The wide open spaces, dotted with
the tents of local drokpas are intoxicating.
Tashi Dor Monastery: Most travelers head for Tashi
Dor, situated on a hammerhead of land that juts into
the south-eastern corner of the lake. Here at the
foot of two wedge-shaped hills are a couple of small
chapels, with views back across the clear turquoise
waters to the huge snowy Nyenchen Tanglha massif.
The monastery is really just a small chapel to the
east of the accommodation area. Inside is an image
of the local deity, Nyenchen Tanglha, which has its
roots in Bon belief and resides in the nearby
mountain of the same name. There are several other
chapels and retreats honeycombed into the rock face.

Mt. KAILASH & MANSAROVAR |
|
Mt. Kailash is
the sacred mountain of Tibet and home of the
great god Shiva. To millions it is the
centre of the spiritual universe and it is
one of the world's most hallowed pilgrimage
sites. Hindus and Buddhists alike trek for
weeks, often months, to this extraordinary
mountain for the festival of Saga Dawa
celebrating the birth of Lord Buddha. It is
a wild, remote place with an all pervading
sense of spirituality few could fail to
appreciate. This is a journey of a lifetime.
a pilgrimage for us all.
