Bardia Jungle Safari Tour

Bardia situated 585 kms south west of Kathmandu, Bardia National Park, covering an are of 968 sq km, is the largest National park in the lowland area of Nepal as the Terai. With 8 types of ecosystems ranging in diversity from flood plains to dense forest, Bardia is an area not only of prime habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, but an area holding the key to the survival of many endangered species.

This is the best place to see tigers, wild elephants and a host of other rare and not-so-rare animals and birds. It is also the only place in Nepal to see freshwater dolphins and black buck antelopes.

Tentative Programme:
Day 01: Arrival and relax in Tharu rest room or beautiful garden. Discover Tharu life and culture through our Tharu village tour.
Day 02: Whole day walking safari to view Gangetic Dolphin-swimming possible.
Day 03. Very early morning bird watching, followed by a chance to relax or explore the surrounding villages. Exploration of Tiger territory by foot. Elephant back safari or Jeep safari.
Day 04 Departure transfer to Airport or Bus Terminal

HOW TO GET THERE:
BY OVERLAND: Bardia National Park can be reached by direct bus departing every after-noon from Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan National Park. While you reach Ambassa, the trun off for the Park, at approx. 3 am. to 6 am. Ambassa is 13 km from the Bardia National Park. so it is important you inform us in advance of your arrival.

BY DRIVING: Driving from Kathmandu or Pokhara by your own or hired vehicle takes approx. 14 hours and enables you to enjoy the daytime scenery. Direct bus also run from Mahendranagar on the Western Nepal-Indian border. Mahendranagar is 12 hours from Delhi and a daylight journey to Almora and Naini Tal.

BY AIR: Flights are available daily from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. flying time is approx. 1 hour although the jeep transfer from the airport to the National Park is 3 hours. There are currently no flight from Pokhara.

JUNGLE SAFARI ACTIVITIES:

CANOE RIDE: During the canoe trip on the Rapti river, you will be able to view the full array of nature's beauty including plenty of birds, crocodiles and other animals. There is a chance you may see the two types of crododiles -Gharial and Mugger basking on the river bank.

VILLAGE TOURS: Experience the uniquely placed culture of the Tharu people. Relish what their culture is like in the Tharu village Museum in the heart of Sauraha in Bachhyauli. For centuries, the Tharus have lived very close to this protected area and hence their tradition reflects their intimate relationship with the natural world. Visit the Tharu village and share their world with them as you reach out touch another culture.

ELEPHANT SAFARI: Seated high on the back of a trained elephant exploring the grasslands and core area of the park, you become an integral part of the life of the national park. The elephant safaris, though not the most comfortable ridges, is an amazing experience. And it doesn't take long to spot at least a rhino in these forest.

JUNGLE DRIVE: Drive into the heart of the park for a good chance to spot the rare species. The drive takes you along time-worn trails with great opportunities of viewing big animals. Don't forget to move on to Kasara, the park headquarters wherein you will get the chance to visit the Kasara Durbar and the Crocodie Breeding Centre.The centre is housed with a number of breeding and hatching ponds to produce and rear the animal until they are ready for release in the wild.

ELEPHANT BREEDING CENTRE: Of all the animals, elephants are probably the most graceful. Our naturalists will take you to the Hattisar to demonstrate. how elephant's meals are prepared and how they eat in the Elephant Breeding Centre. They will explain the nature and habits of elephants. The unique centre was established in 1985 for the captive breeding of domesticated elephants trapping for domestication.

JUNGLE WALK: Walk out and stretch your legs deep into the forest accompanied by professional naturalists as they share their extensive knowledge with you on your way to prime spots in quest of rare and endemic species, Be on the look out for the great one-horned rhinoceros, wild boar, sloth bear, bison, gangetic dolphins, gharial crocodile and the Royal Bengal Tiger.

ELEPHANT BATHING: Just chill out beside the tranquility of the Rapti River and watch the appealing elephant taking a bath or if it's too tempting, join them while taking a dip down the river.

THARU STICK DANCE: Savour the magnificent culture dance of the Tharu communities watching by the bon fire in the evening in any of the hotels of Sauraha.

What to Bring
Although the Terai can be cool during the winter, It can be stiflingly hot during the summer months. If you are headed there in winter, bring along a sweater or jacket. Summer months require cool clothes, good walking shoes, shady hat and sunscreen, Make sure your clothes are in colors-like brown and green-that help you blend into the background.

Carry along some mosquito repellant, anti-diarrhea tablets and anti-histamines. Meanwhile, along with photo equipment, a pair of binoculars will prove invaluable. If you are closer to the monsoon months, carry some water proof jackets and an extra pair of shoes. Just in case.

The Terai jungles are also famous for leeches that appear in the monsoon and are around for a few months after, Salt or a lighted cigarette will make them fall off, do not pull them off as the wound may get infected. Try an insect repellant to keep them away.
