GUANGZHOU LHASA BY TRAIN |
As part of China's mammoth rail project linking the
mainland to Tibet, a branch will extend to Guangzhou
and offer direct links all the way through to Lhasa,
the capital of Tibet.
The trains are reported to have bathing facilities,
an electro-thermal warm water system, and fresh
oxygen is pumped around the train to maintain a
consistent density. As the journey takes you on the
Qinghai-Tibet rail link, the highest rail link in
the world, oxygen masks are available in every seat.
A dining carriage is available serving Sichuan,
Cantonese, Hunan, Western, and Muslim dishes.
The 4980 km journey takes over 2 days (57 hours),
and any non-Chinese must have a special Tibet visa
(available from China Travel Service). There is only
one train in service, so it runs every other day
from both Guangzhou and Lhasa.

Mt. Kailash is
the sacred mountain of Tibet and home of the
great god Shiva. To millions it is the
centre of the spiritual universe and it is
one of the world's most hallowed pilgrimage
sites. Hindus and Buddhists alike trek for
weeks, often months, to this extraordinary
mountain for the festival of Saga Dawa
celebrating the birth of Lord Buddha. It is
a wild, remote place with an all pervading
sense of spirituality few could fail to
appreciate. This is a journey of a lifetime.
a pilgrimage for us all.
