The Gauri Shanker
trekking Area is located northeast of Kathmandu, between the
Langtang / Helambu region and the Everest area. Quick and easy
road access by regular buses from Kathmandu to Bahrabise or
Dolakha Bazzar /Singati.
|
|
Why
trek in the Gauri Shanker Area? |
-
Easy access via a good road
from Kathmandu: Four hours drive by bus
from Kathmandu to Barhabise, or six hours to
Charikot. Dolakha. The area is accessible even
during the monsoon reason, amd there is no need to
depend on flights or calculte extra margins for
"no-fly" days
|
-
Trekking with beautiful
views of the valleys and mountains,
dominated by the massif of Gauri Shanker, as well as
the Rolwaling and Lapchi ranges. The region offers
trekking at relatively low elevations (generally
below 3,000m) - that means few worries about
acclimatization or altitude problems. The terrain is
characterized by sleep hillside paths connecting
scattered villages, as well as some riverside
trails. Higher altitude trekking (above 3,000m)
begins above Simigaon, but most of the area requires
no advantage trekking or mountaineering skills
|
-
Great Ethnic diversity:
a wide range of religious practices and festivals,
lifestyles, food habits, clothing and architecture.
This is a region particularly attractive to trekkers
with time and interest in the local area and
culture, visitors who want to experience the real
Nepal, stopping and enjoying the places they stay in
and the people they meet - although the area can
also offer mountaineering and action-packed
challenges
|
|
|
-
An unspoilt region. at most some 1,000
tourists visit the area each year, most of them on
organised treks. All the visitors surveyed recently
by Eco Himal cited the feature "unspoilt" or
"untouched" as their main reason for choosing the
Gauri Shanker area. Many were on repeat visits,
having particularly enjoyed their first trek there
and wanting to escape the "overcrowding" and
touristy ness" of the main tea-house trekking routes
of Nepal's Big Three trekking areas.
|
|
|
-
In a nutshell: The Gauri Shankar area
is "off the beaten track" yet easily accessible.

Barhabise - Karthali -
Dolangsa - Thingsang La - Kalinchok - Charikot |
|
Only 3-4 hours from
Barhabise is Karthali, with wonderful views and a
campsite with eco lodge. The trek proceeds along ridges
and through forests, passing many shrines en route. The
literal high point of the tour is sacred Kalinchok, 5
hours from the Thingsan La along a good path with
spectacular views of the Ganesh and Langtang Himal,
Lapchi Kang and Rolwaling. Early every morning, pilgrims
come up to the three shrines of Kalinchok to sacrifice
goats and chicken with prayers, singing and dancing.
during August and November full moon, Shamans and
thousands of worshippers come up for all night
celebrations - a memorable event! From Kalinchok the
trail leads steep down to Charikot and bus services. |
|
Medium
Trek: 10 Days |
|
Barhabise
- Karthali - dolangsa - Thingsang La - Bigu - Loting -
Laduk - Orang - Gongar Khola - Singati (Ratomate-Dolakha/Charikot) |
|
The highlight of this trek
is a visit to Bigu Gompa, one of Nepal's largest active
nunneries - an experience no trekker will ever forget.
The excellent trail proceeds along the ridge top, with
stunning views of the mountains ranges as well as the
intricate network of terraced fields. Descending to
Gongar Khola, the trail continues through well tended
fields and picturesque villages. There is a bus service
from Singati, but a more interesting option is to
continue to Ratomate, where lush avocadoes are available
in the late autumn, and then ascend to the lovely Newar
village of Dolakha, with its famed Bhimsen Temple |
|
Expedition
trek for mountaineers:
15-20
days |
|
Dolakha-Singati-Suri
Dobhan-Sikpasor-Kalding-Honobu-Kharka-Tsare-Ramdang-Khare

|
|
For experienced mountain
trekkers: truly a challenging tour off the beaten track!
High points include the passes of Ramdang (4,400m) and
Yalung La (5,300m), stupendous views of Gauri Shankar,
the hhaunted lake of Kal Pokhari, and the many Sherpa
settlements along the way. This trek is described in
detail in the Gauri Shanker area book. A local guide who
knows the way is essential |
